Extreme By Design Film Wed, 02 Apr 2014 14:12:35 +0000 At a time of unprecedented global challenges, the under-30 “millennial” generation has every reason to be disengaged. Yet plenty of millennials areengaged. Call it the empathy revolution. Extreme By Design, an hour-long documentary film, brings this revolution to life by following three Stanford University students as they design and build products to meet basic needs of the world’s poor.

The following link are a number of Design Thinking Resources for your use.

Thanks to the cleanup crew volunteers yesterday Sun, 05 May 2013 17:07:26 +0000 It was more treasure hunt than cleanup as we created nine pallets of trash and 6 pallets of salvage to use for projects or sell outright.

A new project came out of this when we found a palet full of small jars.  We’re going to make a giant Lite-Brite!!

One more day will get us finished and ready to clean the floors.

Anyone available next Saturday May 11?  What’s left will only take a few hours and of course pizza will be provided for lunch.

Thanks Again!

Hand Held CNC Router Fri, 11 Jan 2013 00:54:44 +0000 This position correcting CNC Router  allows you to follow a rough outline of a part on the small screen and tool  auto-corrects to the detailed pattern line.

The tool is attached to a hand held frame.  Actuators within the frame can move the tool to compensate for errors you would make when trying to cut a complex shape.

A high contrast pattern is placed on the work piece.  They are the horizontal bands of shapes in the image above.  The tool creates an internal map of the work piece using a camera.  It can then accurately determine it’s location anywhere on the work piece without the drift that might occur using incremental positioning sensors.  The outline of the cut to be made is shown on the screen.  The location of the tool center is also shown on the screen.  You only need to follow the line within the correction limits of the tool.  The tool digitally corrects to produce remarkably good results.

This device was designed by three MIT students,

Alec Rivers, MIT CSAIL
Ilan E. Moyer, MIT MechE
Frédo Durand, MIT CSAIL

here’s a video of it in operation:

This video accompanies the SIGGRAPH 2012 paper Position-Correcting Tools for 2D Digital Fabrication, by Alec Rivers, Ilan E. Moyer and Fredo Durand. The paper is available here: That site also includes a mailing list where you can sign up to stay informed about a forthcoming commercial version of the position-correcting router.

Totally Refined Wine Bottle Cutting Gizmo Wed, 08 Aug 2012 00:19:48 +0000 My wife bought a plastic (crappy over-priced) glass bottle cutter from Amazon to create glasses and bowls from cut glass wine bottles.  After trying the gizmo she ordered and trying a variety of techniques on the internet I cam up with this.

The glass cutter fits in a slot cut to hold it tightly in the front piece which slides back and forth to change the placement of the cut.

Place the bottle in the jig and firmly hold it against the backstop and turn it completely around to score the bottle.

When the bottle is scored roll the score over a lit candle to heat it up and place the bottle in a bucket of cold water.  The two pieces should snap apart.

Another method of separation is to place the bottle in the sink and pour boiling water over the score line.

Sand the rough edge until smooth.

Wash the pieces thoroughly.
